Get to know the farrier
Your horse, your call. Ask what you need to feel confident.
Question 1
Are you registered with the Farriers Registration Council (FRC)? All practising farriers in the UK are legally required to be registered.
Question 2
What qualifications do you hold — AWCF, DWCF, FWCF? Do you have experience with any specific disciplines or corrective work?
Question 3
How long have you been working as a farrier, and do you cover our area regularly?
Question 4
What services do you offer — trimming, cold shoeing, hot shoeing, corrective shoeing?
Question 5
What do you charge, and is that per horse or per visit?
Question 6
How far in advance do you typically book, and how do you handle last-minute cancellations?
Question 7
Do you carry your own public liability insurance?
FRC verification
You can check whether a farrier is registered with the Farriers Registration Council at farrier-reg.gov.uk. Registration is a legal requirement in the UK, not an optional extra.
Trust your instincts
A good farrier will welcome your questions. If someone is cagey about their qualifications or pushes back on basic questions, take that seriously.
