Ask these before you confirm the appointment. A well-prepared visit is a safe one.
Question 1
How many horses need attention, and what type of work is needed — trim, shoe, corrective?
Question 2
When were the horses last done, and by whom? Is there any ongoing corrective or remedial work I should know about?
Question 3
Do any of the horses have a history of being difficult with farriers — lifting, pulling, kicking?
Question 4
Are the horses shod or barefoot? Do you have a preference going forward?
Question 5
Do any horses have known health conditions that might affect their feet — laminitis, navicular, white line disease?
Question 6
Will you or another responsible adult be on site for the full appointment?
Question 7
Is there a safe, level area to work — ideally a stable or hard standing?
If you’re visiting a new yard for the first time, it’s worth asking whether the horses are used to being handled alone or prefer company. Small details like this make a real difference on the day.
